“Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”
Matthew 28:18-20 (NIV)
A disciple is one who follows Jesus Christ. Discipleship means helping believers grow spiritually. Hebrews 6:1 tells us this, “Let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity.” Christianity is more than just coming to know Jesus Christ in a personal relationship. The Bible says it’s God’s will for you to go on to maturity. Here at COV, we say spirtual maturity is becoming like Jesus Christ.
2 Peter 3:18 says, “Grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 4:11-13 says, “God has given some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of ministry, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all become mature like Christ.”
The definition of evangelism is “sharing the good news.” Ephesians 3:10 says, “His (God’s) intent was that through the church, the manifold wisdom of God should be made known.” In other words, the purpose of the church is to talk about God, talk about the incredible things He has done and the incredible person He is, to make known His wisdom to other people. That is our purpose. Romans 10:13-14 (LB) says, “Anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved, but who can ask Him to save them unless they believe in Him and how can they believe in Him if they have never heard about Him and how can they hear about Him unless someone tells them.” The point of the verse is that you can’t know about God unless somebody tells you. A great majority of people have somebody first tell them about Jesus Christ before they come to church. That’s one of our purposes: to tell others the good news of Jesus Christ. “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. “This same Good News that came to you is going out all over the world. It is changing lives everywhere, just as it changed yours that very first day you heard and understood the truth about God’s great kindness to sinners.” Colossians 1:6
